What is St. John’s Wort? It is a perennial plant with medicinal properties. The key actions of this plant include helping with depression, works as an anti-inflammatory, and assists in wound healing. The constituent in St. John’s Wort that allows it to carry theses actions are phloroglucinols, polycyclic diones, and flavonoids. The herb also works as a restorative and neuroprotector, which helps reverse exhaustion and lower mood. It may also help with seasonal affective disorder.

St. John’s Wort is well-known for its ability to help with depression. It is believed to work in several ways to help alleviate symptoms of depression:

  1. Serotonin regulation: St. John’s wort is thought to increase the levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain that is often associated with mood regulation. By enhancing serotonin levels, it may help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.
  2. Neurotransmitter modulation: It is believed to enhance the activity of several neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters play a significant role in regulating emotions, mood, and motivation.
  3. Anti-inflammatory properties: St. John’s wort contains certain compounds that possess anti-inflammatory properties. There is evidence suggesting that depression may be associated with increased inflammation in the body, and by reducing inflammation, St. John’s wort may help alleviate depressive symptoms.
  4. Antioxidant effects: Some research suggests that St. John’s wort may have antioxidant effects, meaning it helps eliminate harmful free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the brain. Oxidative stress has been linked to various mental health conditions, including depression.

While this herb may be helpful to some, it’s important to note it may decrease the effectiveness of other medicines or cause side-effects. It’s alway recommended to speak with your health care physician when you are wanting to try any supplements
