Bipolar mood disorder is a mental health disorder that goes back and forth from episodes of depression and mania. It varies in severity and to how long the cycles will last. Digestive health is important for those with bipolar mood disorder. An overgrowth of yeast in the intestinal tract may aggravate symptoms of the disorder. Nutritional deficiencies, caused by either not eating what the body is needing, or by poor absorption, may also increase symptoms. Food allergies and intolerances, caffeine, and an excess amount of refined sugars all may play a roll into how severe the cycles of bipolar mood disorder are.
Eating a diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains may help in symptoms. Eliminating sugar and caffeine may also be beneficial for those with this disorder. Decreasing sugar will also help if there is an overgrowth of yeast. Finding out what foods you might be allergic to would be helpful. Once they are determined, try eliminating them as well.
Taking a holistic approach to bipolar mood disorder means considering what we eat plays a role into how we feel. It also means making sure to have some form of exercise to help combat the ups and downs. When we treat our body as a whole and find a balance, we see positive change in every area.
As always, talk to your doctor about any concerns. If you are interested in taking a more holistic approach in your health, make sure your doctor is one that is willing to help you on your journey.
