There are herbs and nutrients for colds we can use to help prevent us from getting sick or shorten the length of time we are sick. Commonly used herbs and vitamins include:
Vitamin C – helps support the immune system by aiding white blood cells in functioning more effectively; enhances oxidative generation; and protects neutrophils (a type of white blood cell)
Zinc – fights off invading bacteria and viruses; increases the activation of immune cells
Garlic – boost the immune system with its antiseptic, antibacterial, and antifungal agents
Shiitake, Maitake, or Reishi – high in vitamin B and C, increases production of immune cells, contains antioxidants that protect and restore the immune system.
Astragalus – antioxidants both protect and support the immune system
Cat’s Claw – increases the activity of white blood cells to help fight off bacteria and viruses
Elderberry – immune-boosting antioxidants, contains vitamins A, B, and C to keep the immune system strong
Yarrow – decreases inflammation, powerful antimicrobial properties
