Hypoglycemia is when our blood sugar levels are lower than the standard range. There are numerous signs and symptoms of sugar levels dipping too low. These symptoms include:

Looking pale, headache, shakiness, sweating, hunger or nausea, irregular or fast heart rate, difficulty concentrating, irritability or anxiety, dizziness or lightheaded, and tingling or numbness of the lips, cheeks, and tongue. 

The most common way to check for hypoglycemia is through lab work. However, numbers may not always tell the whole truth of what is going on. Blood glucose meter help to check levels at different times.  Hypoglycemia is more common among those who have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, but it can affect anyone. If left untreated and becomes severe, hypoglycemia may cause seizures or loss of consciousness.

There are healthy habits we can engage in to help with hypoglycemia. These habits include:

  1. Eat balanced meals: It is important to have regular meals that include a combination of protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates. This helps to prevent blood sugar spikes and crashes.
  2. Avoid sugary foods: Consuming sugary foods and drinks can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, followed by a drop. Stick to whole foods that are low in added sugars.
  3. Include fiber-rich foods: Foods high in fiber, such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables, can help slow down the absorption of sugar and maintain stable blood sugar levels.
  4. Eat small, frequent meals: Instead of having three large meals, try to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. This helps to prevent prolonged periods without food, which can lead to low blood sugar levels.
  5. Snack wisely: Choose healthy snacks that include a mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. Some examples include nuts, seeds, yogurt, whole grain crackers, and vegetables with hummus.
  6. Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is important for overall health, including for managing blood sugar levels. Dehydration can lead to symptoms of low blood sugar, so it is important to stay adequately hydrated.
  7. Be mindful of alcohol: Alcohol can cause a drop in blood sugar levels, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. It is important to drink alcohol in moderation and always with food.
  8. Exercise regularly: Regular physical activity can help to stabilize blood sugar levels and improve overall insulin sensitivity. However, it is important to monitor blood sugar levels before, during, and after exercise, and adjust food intake or medication as needed.
  9. Get enough sleep: Lack of sleep can affect blood sugar control and contribute to imbalances in hormone levels. It is important to prioritize quality sleep to support overall health.
  10. Manage stress levels: Stress can have a negative impact on blood sugar levels. Implementing stress management techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies, can help to keep stress levels in check.
